The End of the Season is Near

Our last farmers market, a busy September, and a little news from Casco Bay

It’s hard to believe but the end of the season is near. The mornings are getting chillier, the days are getting shorter, and we’re getting ready to put the farm to bed for the winter. Over the next few weeks we’ll be busy sinking our cages, securing our gear, and preparing for the colder months ahead.

This Sunday, October 11, will be our LAST Sacrborough Farmers Market of the season!

If you’ve been meaning to stock up on Indigo Oysters - or finish off your CSA - now’s your chance! As always, we’ll have fresh oysters available, and we’d love to see you one last time before we wrap things up. Please be sure to reach out ahead of time if you’d like to place a larger order so we can make sure to harvest enough. You can also order through our website: www.indigo-oysters.com.

My mom on the boat!

You may have heard about the unusual algal bloom that made its way through Casco Bay in September. The culprit was Karenia mikimotoi, a natrually occurring marine phytoplankton that can cause serious problems for marine life. While it’s not harmful to humans, it can negatively affect shellfish and other marine organisms by reducing oxygen levels in the water.

We were incredibly fortunate that our little corner of Casco Bay appears to have escaped the worst of it, and our oysters fared well. Unfortunately, the bloom did hit some of our neighboring shellfish communities pretty hard - softshell clams took a big hit - and our hearts go out to our fellow shellfish growers and harvesters.

September was a big month for Indigo - between harvesting and keeping up with the farm, we also managed to squeeze in some fun!

We were lucky enough to have two oyster shucking events at Orange Bike Brewing in Portland, and we had such a great time! There’s something pretty special about getting people together over fresh oysters and cold beer. A HUGE THANK YOU to the team at Orange Bike Brewing for welcoming us and supporting our little oyster farm.

We still have a little work ahead before the farm is tucked away for winter, but we’re already thinking about what next season will bring.

Come see us this Sunday at the Scarborough Farmers Market for one last oyster fix!

Until next time,

Alexus & Flo
