Our story
Co-founded in 2024, by Alexus Bond and Florence Edwards, Indigo Oyster Co. is a women owned and operated oyster farm in Yarmouth, Maine. We are weaving our Black and Asian identities into oyster culture from sea to table.
We've been best friends since we were 12. As we grew, our love of oysters grew until one day we decided to live the dream.
Now, we grow oysters that we are proud of. Bright, briny oysters steeped in culture, sustainability, and accessibility.
Our mission
We believe oysters should be cared for by hand—just as they were when wild harvesting was the norm. As a small, independent farm, we hand-tumble and hand-sort every oyster to ensure quality from sea to table. Our customers know they’re receiving oysters raised with intention, care, and respect for the ocean. To further reduce our carbon footprint, we harvest by kayak, keeping our process as sustainable as it is authentic.

FounderAlexus (she/her) brings a lifelong passion for the outdoors and a deep commitment to environmental preservation. For her, oyster farming is more than just work — it’s a calling that connects her directly to the rhythms of the tides and the ever-changing character of the ocean.
As part of the blue economy, Indigo Oyster Co. combines a love of the sea with a mission to create something sustainable and impactful. Each day on the water is a reminder of the balance between nature and livelihood, and working closely with the ocean fuels her dedication to both.
Through this journey, Alexus is proud to work alongside Flo to produce oysters that not only taste exceptional but also contribute to healthier oceans and stronger coastal communities.

Founder
Flo (she/they) has been connected to the Casco Bay watershed since the age of 12, when their family moved to Portland from New York. As an oyster aquaculturist, Flo has worked to rebuild the connections between Black history and oyster harvesting.
Flo is the founder of Fourth Friday, organized gatherings of multigenerational BIPOC individuals that network while engaging in art and food. In addition to being an oyster farmer, Flo is a dentist, podcaster, community builder, journalist, and storyteller.
There’s no food she loves more than oysters. She’s committed to being a part of black oyster culture and making Maine oysters accessible. Alexus is the belly shell to her top shell, and the two make Indigo Oysters.
Our Farm
The farm is located in Yarmouth, Maine off of Lane’s Island.
